Different Types Of QR Code - Feb 2017

Since their original inception, QR Code have gone from strength to strength. QR Codes are standardized and this has an advantage in driving the technology, has meant all development and progression of QR Codes has been left to their creator, Denso Wave.

Denso Wave have not forgotten about QR Codes since they created them and certainly haven't ignored people's feedback. Over time they introduced new types of QR Code that offer new and specific features. Some with more success than others. These are summarised below.

Micro QR Code On Battery Micro QR Code - Micro QR codes are a smaller version of a “normal” QR Code, they are designed to store only small amounts of numerical data in a smaller surface area, and their intended use is on objects where physical surface area is a limiting factor (on circuit boards for identification of electronic components is a common use). We discuss Micro QR Codes in more technical detail here.

iQR Code with rectangles iQR Code - These Codes are able to store data more efficiently, and the max number of rows and columns is greater, therefore they can store a considerably larger amount of data than a standard QR Code. iQR Codes also support rectangular modules (the traditionally black squares seen in QR Codes), this allows for them to be printed direct onto some non-flat surfaces. The amount of damage that error correction can overcome is also greater. We discuss iQR Codes in more technical detail here.

Frame QR Frame QR Code - Frame QR codes have a central blank area that can be used as a canvas for easier insertion of a logo or other graphic within the code. These are not directly compatible with QR Code scanners and generators and require updates to both in order to generate and read. These were developed after Denso Wave identified the trends for people to insert their images into QR Codes. We look into Frame QR Codes more technical detail here.
